[ANALYSIS] Goblin over Coffee Prince?!

[ANALYSIS] Goblin over Coffee Prince?!

For the past two weeks I have decided to watch two K-dramas with Gong Yoo as the lead actor – Goblin (2016) and Coffee Prince (2007). I find Goblin really magical & its scenes are really aesthetically pleasing. The OSTs are really catchy and very magical. On the other hand, Coffee Prince is your typical “girl meets boy” with a twist. Since it is one of the pioneer K-dramas that paved way for the rise of the Korean culture, I understood how people immediately got hooked with this drama. Since I’m a newbie K-drama fan, I got a little culture shocked with how few the OSTs were, and the songs were more Western (like they played more English songs, but I really don’t care since it’s the the sinaunang K-dramas). Because of Coffee Prince, I suddenly wanted to visit the said cafe since I noticed that it is still standing up to this point.

I actually formulated a mind-boggling yet fun theory while watching Coffee Prince. I suggest that if you plan to see the theory yourself, you may want to watch Goblin first before proceeding with Coffee Prince. You can also watch Coffee Prince first then watch Goblin, but I think you’ll probably lose the essence of the theory.

So what the hell is this theory then?

I assumed that Choi Hankyul (the leading male in Coffee Prince) was reincarnated as Kim Shin (the protagonist and the titular character of Goblin).

Okay hold up, hold up! How the hell Choi Hankyul is Kim Shin? Besides the fact that Gong Yoo played the two roles?

  1. Choi Hankyul is the grandson of a chairwoman of a famous food company in Korea, which means that he’s really rich. Meanwhile, Kim Shin is already wealthy because he had connections with the chairperson of a famous furniture company (which turns out to be the descendants of the kid who served Goblin 900+ years ago, and promised to serve him for the rest of their lives – or at least until Goblin returns to ashes).
  2. Apart from that, Choi Hankyul could also cook! There are some scenes that he would cook – even though there was one scene that he was cooking ramen with Go Eunchan. In Goblin, Kim Shin would also cook up a mean steak while his good friend (or enemy XD) the Grim Reaper would make salad.
  3. There was also a scene where Choi Hankyul took Go Eunchan to a baseball court and they played throughout the night. On the other hand, Kim Shin was seen playing with a young boy – the young boy (who happens to be Taehee, Ji Euntak’s oppa) said that when he wins, Kim Shin wouldn’t get the piano while Kim Shin bets otherwise. Since Kim Shin won, the piano mysteriously disappeared when he arrived at their home. (This is actually the scene that made me realize that there are some parallelisms between Coffee Prince and Goblin.)
  4. While watching Coffee Prince, I could really see Kim Shin in Choi Hankyul (and no, not because of Gong Yoo). The two characters portray as a hyper guy who loves to play hard-to-get with the love of their lives (Go Eunchan for Hankyul, Ji Euntak for Goblin). They also try their best to make their girlfriends happy. Although they would fall into fights, they would immediately make up.

Speaking of fights, there are actually a bit of difference in these two guys. The two of them couldn’t swallow their prides, but if their girls are really right, they would really swallow it up. The only difference is that Hankyul really gets angry (like the usual screaming-until-the-other-bursts also), while Goblin is really patient (but he gets angry easily with the Grim Reaper so…).

For their leading ladies, I noticed that their loves would carries the “Eun” – which kinda funny for me. But I never see Go Eunchan and Ji Euntak as one, even though the two of them are tough, positive, and independent. For me, I think that Go Eunchan was just a preparatory stage for Choi Hankyul/Kim Shin in order to meet Ji Euntak in the next few years.

I know some of you would point out loopholes, but I’ll try my best to explain how I have come to make this theory besides the points stated above.

  • Goblin mentioned to Ji Euntak that he changes identity in order to live as a citizen. I assumed that he would change his identity every 10 years. (I assumed that it is 10 years because I watched a movie with a similar concept – which is “Adeline”, and I hope you guys could watch it!)
  • I also assumed that the story was set in 2007. If we take into account the 10-year change of identity, the story of Goblin would be a perfect match – since the drama was set in 2016 and somewhat ended in 2017.
  • In the scene where Goblin saved Ji Euntak’s mother in 1998, probably he was already harboring a new identity but, of course, you still need to use your Goblin powers. In Coffee Prince, he doesn’t have any powers but I believe that he also has one but decided not to use it since he is around mortals.

I hope that these points would already suffice the probable theory that Coffee Prince and Goblin are somewhat related. Please don’t really take this seriously since this is just for fun and I really had to throw this in since it’s really bugging my mind. XD

Anyway, leave a comment down below if you have any thoughts also and if you also encountered the same as I do while watching some K-dramas! 🙂
